Culms dwarf zigzag, to 120 cm tall, 2-6 mm in diam., internodes short, 1-3 cm long; nodes prominent, with a single branch, occasionally 2.
Sheath of culm papyriferous, thin, cream with green stripes outside; auricles of sheath small, with tufts of brown bristles; ligule of sheath convex, aristate; blade of sheath triangular ovate or narrowly triangular, acute at apex, base narrowed. Leaves 3-13, lanceolate, 3-14 cm long, 0.4-1.3 cm broad, dark green with white yellowish stripes, veins 305, veinlets 7, tessellate, densely pubescent on both surfaces spinulose-scabrous along margins; petiole short; auricles of leaf conspicuous with tufts of bristles; ligule of leaf rounded, aristate; sheath of leaf glabrous, ciliate along one side.
Spikelets linear, several-flowered, densely pubescent on rachilla.
